Aleksei Navalny

Aleksei Navalny is a Russian politician, blogger and founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK in Russian). He is one of the harshest critics of Russian authorities.
In 2014, Navalny was convicted in a politically motivated case and given a suspended sentence of 3.5 years' imprisonment. In August 2020, he was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent and was transported for treatment to Germany in a coma. Russian authorities then accused Navalny of violating the terms of his sentence by not registering with a probation officer. When Navalny returned to Russia on 17 January 2021, he was immediately arrested, his probation was cancelled and replaced with a custodial sentence. His term expires in August 2023.

The European Court of Human Rights has found the original sentence "arbitrary and manifestly unreasonable". It also ordered Russia to immediately release Navalny in February 2021, but in both cases Russia ignored the Court's decisions.
Amnesty International considers Aleksei Navalny to be a prisoner of conscience and calls for his immediate and unconditional release and, pending that, for him to be allowed treatment by medical specialists he trusts.
