Chairman of TV channel 4Shabab (closed by the Saudi authorities), talk-show personality, cleric and currently also writer, Ali Al-Omari promoted a liberal exegesis of the Quran in order to make religion accessible for young people. On his own website, he published articles on topics ranging from religious questions, his understanding of being free, to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He was imprisoned on September 2017 and convicted for 30 terrorism-related charges. The sentence is still pending but the prosecution sought the death penalty.
