Ilham Tohti
Ilham Tohti, an economics professor at Central University for Nationalities (Minzu University) in Beijing, the founder of “Uighur Online” website, and a well-known critic of China’s ethnic and religious policies in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (Xinjiang), was sentenced to life imprisonment on 23 September 2014 on charge of "separatism".

Ilham Tohti, 50, an Uyghur citizen-journalist and academic currently serving a life sentence in China, was awarded the European Parliament Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought on October 24th. This follows the awarding by the Council of Europe on September 30th of the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize.
