Marwan Barghouti

Marwan Barghouti played a key role in facilitating education, where he started the prisoners’ remote education program in Palestinian universities through an agreement with Al-Quds University-Abu Dis in 2012. Barghouthi served as the Secretary-General of Fatah in the West Bank. He was arrested in 2002 and sentenced to five life sentences and 40 years in Hadarim prison on charges relating to alleged military operations, where he notably refused to present a defense to the charges against him. The charges and sentence exemplify the Israeli occupation’s targeting and arrest of Palestinian political leaders to suppress Palestinians’ exercise of political sovereignty and self-determination. During his incarceration, Barghouti received his PhD in Political Sciences from the Arab League’s Institute of Arab Research and Studies.
