Saudi Arabia

Raif Badawi

Blogger, founder of Free Saudi Liberals forum. He has been detained since 17 June 2012 and sentenced to 10 years in prison, 1,000 lashes and a 10-year ban on leaving the country after his release. He was initially accused of apostasy, which is punishable by death in Saudi Arabia. After the first 50 lashes were administered, Badawi’s flogging sessions were suspended and the Saudi authorities finally abolished flogging. But he continues to be held in an isolation cell and his contact with the outside world is limited to two phone calls a week with his family, who now live in Canada.
